Biomedical Sciences: Research

The master’s programme in Biomedical Sciences – Research consists of compulsory components (e.g. courses and research projects) and electives. The total amount of credits of this two-year programme is 120 EC. Please check the list below for detailed descriptions of the components involved in the Research specialisation.

The master’s programme has the following objectives:

  • to impart to students academic knowledge, insight, skills, and methodology in the field of biomedical sciences;

  • to encourage students to adopt an academic attitude by acquiring the ability to:

  • engage in individual and independent academic thinking

  • analyse complex issues

  • write academic reports

  • apply specialist knowledge and skills in a philosophical and social context;

  • to prepare students for an academic career and postgraduate education, or to prepare them for a career in teaching or another career outside academia

Research Specialisation

The MSc research programme is taught in English. The study programme aims at deepening and broadening the student’s knowledge within those research areas which determine the LUMC profile. Deepening shall primarily take place during the two Junior Research Projects (20 weeks in MSc1, 28 weeks in MSc2) and during the Scientific review. Broadening shall be achieved as the student has to become familiar with at least 4 different LUMC profile-determining research areas through his/her choice for the Junior Research Projects, the Frontier of Science and elective courses (please also refer to the document on Procedures for Training Periods).
The Research Specialisation allows you to focus to a certain extent on a specific scientific area. For those interested in working with (large) data sets (Data-driven research), Neurosciences, Immunity/Infectious Disease or Cancer Pathogenesis and Therapy, focus is offered in specific tracks on these subjects in the 2nd master year.
