The course will be given at level 500, expanding on knowledge acquired in the first- and second-year Bachelor-s courses.

Description

Period: 16 November 2020 - 11 December 2020

The main theme of this advanced course is translational biomedical research in surgery. Based on examples from the current research program in the department of surgery, the students will be introduced in the translational aspects of the biomedical research currently being performed in the department. This comprises the vascular surgery research focused on vascular remodeling in aneurysm formation, atherosclerosis and angiogenesis, the surgical oncology research on biomarkers, tumor-microenvironment, proteomics in various tumors as well as image guided surgery, treatment options and operation methods. Furthermore it touches upon transplantation surgery research, in its epidemiological and biomedical aspects.

The close interaction between clinical and basic research will be addressed by presenting topics both from a clinical point of view by clinicians and from a basic research point of view by the researchers, illustrating the interactions in the program.

The course consists of lectures, surgery demonstrations via live connection with the operation theatre, assignments, debate, literature discussions, panel discussion, a research proposal and lectures prepared by the students.

Program
The program will consist of an introduction in the vascular research program, starting with the assignments and preparing the group lectures, also the transplantation surgery research program will be presented. The oncological surgery will focus on its clinical and research aspects, Furthermore there will be lectures on more general aspects like different approaches towards research in academia and industry, career aspects and publication strategies.

Research competences:
Addressing a clinical problem in a translational way, integrating clinical and basic research aspects. This is being done both by preparing presentations on relevant topics and designing adequate research programs on selected topics as a group or in couples under supervision of PhD students performing research in the department.
Professional competences:
Collaborating with peers, apprehending new information on clinical issues, combined with basic research issues on that very topic and translate this new knowledge in practical research proposals.

  • Translates current challenges in clinics into research projects with a more biomedical character.

  • Formulates a research question and presents a possible approach for addressing this in a research project.

Plenary seminars provided by experts in the field, self study assignments and interactive discussions between trainees and tutors, presentations prepared by students (assisted by tutors) and written assignments prepared by the students.
