Introduction to Heritage Studies: Sites in Context

Description

This course provides an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of heritage, including archaeological sites, historic buildings, cities, and landscapes. It will introduce the key theories, approaches, management issues, as well as policies and practices related to archaeological heritage in a global context. It will discuss what heritage is, how it is being used, valued, and managed, as well as how it is being mobilized to tackle contemporary issues. Examples and case studies will be used to clarify and illustrate these topics.

The course further discusses a range of contemporary issues and strategies, covering environmental challenges (such as climate change), (post)colonialism and nationalism, and community participation, as well as the relevance of heritage in current times of conflict, ecological crisis, societal, ethical, and political issues.

Course set-up

  • 2 hours of lectures weekly, followed by 1-2 hours of tutorials weekly;

  • Assignments and tasks;

  • Readings.

Course objectives

At the end of this course, students are able to:

  • Understand the social, cultural, and political roles of heritage in contemporary society;

  • Recognize heritage and its value as a tool for resilience and transformation in the face of global challenges;

  • Analyze contemporary issues in heritage conservation and management;

  • Demonstrate collaborative skills through group assignments.

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Tutorials;

  • Work groups.

You will participate in tutorial sessions coordinated by Teaching Assistants (TAs). During these tutorials, you will engage in activities and exercises about the weekly topics.

Assessment method

  • Final Group Project (70%);

  • Individual Assignment (30%).

Attendance and active participation in every lecture and every tutorial are compulsory. If you are unable to attend a lecture or tutorial due to a special occasion, please notify the TAs. Students can only miss two lectures or tutorials per block. More than 2 absences are a fail, which will not be compensated.

By joining the lectures, you will be prepared for the final group project. Tutorials are designed to give you time to work on the final group project and for tutors to give you feedback on it.

The final course grade is the weighted average of all assessment parts (assignment and final project). All assignments must be submitted by the stated deadlines via Brightspace.

  • The passing grade for any assignment is 5.0 minimum;

  • Late submissions will not be accepted;

  • Assignment retake: Permitted only if the final course grade is insufficient (below 5.0 – see Faculty exam regulations). A new topic and a new deadline may be assigned the examiner.

The final group project and individual assignment are mandatory. You must pass them to complete the course.

Registration

BA1 students must register themselves for the lectures, tutorials, and exams of through MyStudymap.
Based on the registration for the tutorial of Introduction to Heritage Studies: Sites in Context, the Student Administration will enroll students for the tutorials of Exploratory Data Analysis.

If you are not a first-year BA Archaeology student but are required to take this course, or if you wish to take it as an elective, you can register via this form.

The Student Administration will register all pre-master students for the lectures, tutorials and exams of their programme.
