Admission to one of the following programmes is required:

  • MA Philosophy 120 EC: specialisation Philosophy of Psychology

Description

In the Tractatus Wittgenstein claims that logic is transcendental. Would this mean that it is impossible to think illogical? Are the logical laws constitutive for thought? And are we to give a transcendental argument for the logical laws, or only for the basic laws of logic? We read the classical texts from Wittgenstein and Frege, as well as the papers in the modern debate.

Course objectives

Students who successfully complete the course will have a good understanding of:

  • philosophy of logic;

  • knowledge of Frege, Wittgenstein, modern discussion on the fundamental laws of logic.

Students who successfully complete the course will be able to:

  • apply insights obtained in philosophy of logic into a paper of their own;

  • gain an independent position in relation to the literature, and will be able to write a substantial paper.

Total course load 10 EC x 28 hours = 280 hours

  • Attending seminars (3 hours x 13 weeks): 39 hours

  • Preparation seminars / study of compulsory literature: 161 hours

  • Writing paper: 80 hours

Weighing

The paper counts as 100% of the grade.

Resit

The resit consists of one examination, consisting of a paper. The mark for the resit replaces the previously earned mark for the paper.

Active participation in class is required for admission to the resit.
Students who have obtained a satisfactory grade for the first examination cannot take the resit.

Inspection and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
