Personal and Professional Development

Course
2018-2019

Entry requirements

Second year students of the Honours College FSW programme, Science & Society track.

Introduction

This year, we will further explore how your motives, passion and mission relate to your current state of personal and interpersonal competences. This builds on the work you did during the introductory HC year in workshop Personal & Professional Purpose. This year you will take part in two PPD seminars (called: II Start and II Finish) at the beginning and the end of your 2nd HC academic year. We use a flipped-classroom approach, where much of the work will take place outside the meetings.

Preparatory assignment II Start
Two weeks before the PPD II Start seminar (directly after the Year 2 kick-off meeting) you will carry out a preparatory assignment with some people from your own network to help you obtain an image of your own capacities and competences, and how these have developed since the start of your HC trajectory. The profile of competences you submitted at the start of your first year will serve as a point of departure.

Seminar II Start
During the PPD II Start seminar, we will help you build a clearer view of your current development by also including feedback from other people close to you on this subject. Also, we will (re)visit your earlier and current motivations and ideas on your professional development. By comparing your own assessment of your professional skills with the view of others, you build a clearer view of your current development.

Integrative assignment II Start
After the seminar, you will anchor this knowledge with a brief integrative assignment where you update your Purpose Diagram and your Future Self image.

Preparatory assignment II Finish
By the end of the year, two weeks before the PPD II Finish seminar, you will carry out a reflective and interview assignment that focusses on how the choices in your BA and HC programme have worked out this year in relation to your own future self-image and purpose definition.

Seminar II Finish
During this PPD meeting, using the preparatory assignment, you will examine your professional development over the past year(s) and formulate an objective /learning intention for the year to come.

Integrative assignment II Finish
Formulating a concise summary of the most important insights obtained over the year, anchoring an intent for the Ba III year to come.

Learning objectives

At successful completion of this PPDII, you will:

  • Have a clear image of the competences and qualities you developed during this year.

  • Have obtained more detailed insight into the paths you have followed and the learning path you want to project into the future.

  • Be able to motivate your direction of choice amongst the diversity of possibilities available.

  • Be able to make a commitment to the learning path you choose.

Mode of instruction

In this course, a substantial part of the time investment and study takes place before and after the meetings. Your preparation is already required two weeks before the first seminar. You will fill out an online assignment, obtained cooperation of one or more people close to you, and done an interview and reported on that. During the II Start seminar you will work with this material to anchor your insights. The II Finish is preceded by a similar preparatory assignment. The course is concluded with an integrated view and commitment to a direction in study in a poster presentation.
