Research Methodology: Linguistics


Admission requirements

Students need to have completed the Propedeuse in Latin American Studies. This course can be followed by students in both tracks Spanish and Portuguese.
Non major students who want to take this course should contact the lecturer.


This course prepares students for their final thesis in Linguistics (Bachelor scriptie). Students will get an overview of the different methods used in linguistic research across a range of areas, including sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, as well as corpus approaches, while also having opportunities to delve more deeply into specific areas of interest.

Course objectives

To be prepared to write their final paper
To be able to place their own methods in context
To be able to critically read studies that use different methods
To be able to critically discuss the literature
To be able to carry out small assignments based on language use to practice the different steps needed in linguistic research.

  • In-Class: 28 hours (2 hours p/week x 14 weeks)

  • Reading and Class Preparation: 56 hours (4 hours p/week x 14 weeks)

  • Preparation for in-class presentations: 12 hours

  • Final Written Paper: 30 hours

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Minimum 80% attendance required. Students who do not meet this requirement will not have their assigments, presentation or paper corrected.
Students are expected to come to class prepared and ready to participate in class discussion. All readings assigned for the week must be done prior to class. Every student is expected to contribute to class discussion through oral questions and comments every class.
