The Revolution of Learning in the Digital Age


Admission requirements

This course is an Honours Class and therefore in principle only available to students of the Honours College. There are a few places available for regular students.


Learning has always been an important part of human nature, as adapting to changing circumstances in our environment is essential for survival. Similarly, in our modern day life, learning new skills, acquiring new knowledge or gaining new insights is crucial to our success in life. It is most likely the very reason why you are attending classes at our university in the first place.

The tools and methods that we use to learn, however, are changing rapidly due to digital technology. You may already submit a paper on Blackboard, use voting devices during lectures, or follow an online course for learning new languages. According to experts, this is only the beginning of a revolution in learning, both on an individual level and for society as a whole.

In this Honours class we will explore new possibilities of the digital age for learning and education. Examples include virtual Reality, serious games and online education. You will learn what these possibilities may bring both to society and to you as a student.

At the end of the course you will write a proposal for your own educational program on how to implement digital innovation in our University. Indeed, we may take it to the next level and actually realize your ideas!

Course objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will:

  • have acquired basic knowledge of various digital developments and an understanding of their implications for learning and education;

  • have acquired more detailed understanding of selected digital developments and their implications for learning and education;

  • be able to critically evaluate the potential and limitations of these developments;

  • be able to relate these implications to their own educational programs;

  • be able present their own ideas regarding digital innovations in education in creative ways;

  • be able to make specific suggestions on how to bring digital innovation in their own educational programs.

Session 1: Introduction, background digital developments, learning and eduction
Session 2 – 6: guest speaker on specific digital development (e.g., Virtual Reality, serious games).
Session 7: Conclusion, discussion of final assignment

Course Load

This course is worth 5 EC, which means the total course load equals 140 hours.

  • Interactive seminars: 7 seminars of 2 hours

  • Literature reading: 4 hours p/week x 7

  • Weekly Assignments: 8 hours p / week x 6

  • Final assignment: 50 hours

Assessment method

  • 50% Weekly assignments

  • 50% Final assignment of 3000 words


Blackboard will be used in this course. Students will be registered for the Blackboard module by the course instructor.

All relevant literature (papers) will be made available through Blackboard.
