Admission requirements

Advanced level of Spanish (C1-C2). Students with advanced knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese and a passive knowledge of Spanish (listening and reading) will be accepted, and may be expressed orally and in writing in Portuguese.

Description

This course aims to discuss and analyze the place of politics in Latin American culture. Concepts of international and Latin American theory, with special attention to the relationship between image, speech, fiction and community use. The leitmotif of the seminar is to distinguish the place of politics in Latin American literary and cinematic fiction in the twentieth and twenty-first century. More particularly, this course will focus on the redeployment of sensitivity that could generate an aesthetic and political reconfiguration.

Course objectives

a) General: stimulate theoretical abstraction and reasoning ability, comprehension and discussion of speculative texts and competition in the concrete analysis of complex examples.

b) Specific: propose a hypothesis about the tensions between politics and fiction into a work of fiction.

Course Load

Full course load: 280 hours.

  • Class hours: 3 hours per week: 39 hrs;

  • Hours of study / reading material: 121 hrs (7 pages per hour = 847 pages);

  • Hours for writing the final work: 120 hrs.

Assessment method

  • Active participation in class (being present at least 80% of the classes, having read the texts beforehand). This will be evaluated in the discussion and presentation of text: 20% of the mark;

  • Presentation of one of theoretical texts: 20% of the grade;

  • Written work: 60% of the grade.

The papers for the research master should pay more attention to the theoretical framework of their paper and relate the case study to a key debate on Latin American Modernities (discussed in the core courses). To this end, these students will get at least one extra individual meeting focused on theory and a more complex research question.

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.
