The general aim of this course is to stimulate you to expand your knowledge in a wide range of subjects, follow your curiosity and develop a constructive and critical attitude as well as enhance your writing skills.

Course outline
This course consists of two parts.

Part 1.
You will attend at least 10 lectures (there is no maximum) from the list presented on Blackboard. These lectures present different perspectives from a range of disciplines – such as political sciences, public administration, humanities, archaeology, etc. and from various organizations. An overview of these lectures can be found in the Calendar Lectures 2014-2015.pdf on blackboard. Please consult the calendar on a regular basis as updates will be made available during the academic year when new opportunities arise.
Most lectures are free of charge, however, for some lectures you will have to buy a ticket. If you choose to attend such a lecture beware of these costs. Of course you can avoid the ones you have to pay for. It might also be possible that you have to register, please make sure you do so. In order to show you have attended the ten lectures, use the attendance card (see below).
You are required to hand in a review of 8 out of 10 lectures. You are free to choose which one. The review has to be uploaded on blackboard via Turn it in within two weeks after the lecture and before 23.00 PM. A format for the review can be found below and on blackboard Lectures & Journalism – assignments. These reviews will be used as input for the writing clinics.

Part 2.
The writing clinic will be taught in English or in Dutch. You are free to choose which one, however, once chosen you are expected to stay in that class (for schedules see below). The clinic consists of five meetings. Each meeting addresses a different writing topic, for instance “the structure of a good newspaper article”. In these meetings you will not only work with theories of journalism, but you will also practice different writing styles such as reviews and columns.

Learning aims:
