Visiting Chair Chile 2016: The Politics of Social Policy in Latin America

Admission requirements

To be a registered student of any Master programme at Leiden University or other Dutch University, and to have a good command of the Spanish language.

This course is also open for some senior bachelor students who want to specialize on Chile.

Description

Each year an eminent Chilean scholar is invited to occupy this Visiting Professorial Chair at the Department of Latin American Studies (LAS). The Chile Chair focuses on the social, cultural, political and economic evolution of Chile, with special emphasis on the national reality from the 1980s onwards. This course examines the politics of building, sustaining and reforming social policy in Latin America, with special emphasis on the Chilean case. It focuses particular on the impact that political factors have on social policy.

Course objectives

To be able to assimilate in a relatively short period of time a specialized account about a specific socio-economic, political and cultural subject that is currently taking place in Chile. To write a paper based partly in Chilean local sources about one of the topics which have been studied during the course. To make a structured oral presentation in public in which an in-depth analysis is made about a particular article.

The course consists of twelve lectures (4 hrs a week) in February and March 2016.

Course Load

5 EC = 140 hours in total. 24 hours for class attendance. 32 hours for reading assignments and preparing an oral presentation 84 hours for writing a paper.

10 EC: 280 hours in total 24 hours for class attendance. 76 hours for reading assignments and preparing an oral presentation 180 hours for writing a paper.

Assessment method

Participation in class [20%] and an essay [80%]
For 5 ec’s, the paper has to have a length of 3000 words
For 10 ec’s, the paper has to have a length of 6000 words
Only the paper can be redone in case of a resit (80%)
For those following a research master, more attention will be paid to the theoretical framework and the analysis of the paper.

Blackboard

Blackboard will be used to post all the necessary information about the course (programme, time tables, announcements, etc.). Also announcements will be posted on interesting activities (such as Conferences, workshops, expositions, etc.), which are related to the themes analysed during the course.
