Basic knowledge of Korean history and (tangible/intangible) culture is desired.
Description
This course investigates various aspects of Korean material culture. It will look into the broader context within which we come into contact with material culture (such as in museums and exhibitions), but attention will also be paid to concrete themes such as clothing, religious artifacts, everyday utensils etc.
The vantage point for this course will be the Korean collection in the Museum Volkenkunde. Part of the classes will be used to go hands on with the collections. The aim is to foster understanding with students regarding a) the variety of artifacts that are present at the Museum, and b) practical and theoretical aspects of displaying material culture.
Course objectives
To gain substantial knowledge about Korean material culture and heritage, as well as the display thereof.
To gain insight into the variety of Korean artifacts and the size of the Korea collections at Museum Volkenkunde, and the ways in which these can be utilized in study and research.
To obtain a critical understanding of theoretical, disciplinary, and practial aspects of the Korea collections at Museum Volkenkunde.
To practice oral and writing skills and to learn how to plan and conduct a focused research project.

The total workload of 140 hours for this course is calculated as follows:
Course hours: 2 hours p.w. x 13 weeks: 26 hours
Class preparation: 4 hours p.w. x 13 weeks: 52 hours
Research proposal: 12 hours
Presentation: 4 hours
Final paper (incl. reading/research): 46 hours
Assessment method
Assessment is done by means of:
Participation (paper proposal and presentation): 30%
Written exam: 30%
Final paper: 40%
