Description
The purpose of this seminar is twofold. Firstly, the course will explore the rich transnational networks that existed in late-nineteenth and early twentieth century Asia. These ranged from political, religious and intellectual networks, to networks created by migration and trade. The course aims to explore both the relatively privileged networks of educated revolutionaries, (inter)nationalists, and intellectuals, as well as networks from ‘below’, such as those of sailors and traders. In this context, special emphasis will be put on anti-imperialist movements. Secondly, the seminar will explore the methodological and practical issues involved in transcending national frameworks to practice transnational history, as well as discuss the potential limits and pitfalls of this framework. The course includes several assignments, ranging from short papers to reviews of the course literature.
Course objectives
To gain an understanding of transnational networks in late nineteenth and early twentieth century Asia, along with the main historiographical debates related to it.
To develop understanding of the different ways in which historians can ‘read’ the available primary and secondary sources for writing transnational history.
To further develop writing skills by putting together well-argued papers based on well-selected sources.
To practice presentation skills by participating in class discussions and by giving a talk on one of the course’s subthemes.
