Privatissimum: UN Peacekeeping

Course
2012-2013

The privatissimum brings together the two specialisations. It is focused on legal aspects of UN peace operations. This includes “traditional” UN peacekeeping operations such as the United Nations Emergency Force I, through later operations such as the UN Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until recent UN operations such as the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) and international territorial administrations such as the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK). The course will deal inter alia with the following aspects of peace operations: legal basis of peace operations; use of force and Rules of Engagement; Status of Forces Agreements and jurisdiction, and responsibility for internationally wrongful acts and claims. Guest speakers will be invited to share their expertise on specific issues. The course will try to balance practical and theoretical legal aspects of peace operations.
