Fieldwork Latin American and the Caribbean

Admission requirements

To be registered as a student of the Research Master Latin American and Caribbean Studies.

Description

Students have to carry out on a individual basis an original field work research in a chosen Latin American and/or Caribbean country. This research has a maximum of of two months. During that period they have to carry out interviews with respondents, scholars, governmental officials, NGO representatives and the like about an specific subject. They have also to collect written information from institutes, archives, and all kind of institutions about the studied subject.

Course objectives

Learning to carry out an academic research project in a different socio-cultural setting. Ability to make contacts with people and institutions to gather the required data and information within a limited period of time. Learning to apply research methods into practice and to report on the results of the investigation.

Timetable

Students have to carry out their fieldwork in a maximum of three months (the exact period must be discussed with the supervisor).

Assessment method

Written communications (via emails) to the individual supervisor on a regular basis during the fieldwork about the progress of the research. Presentation of a complete research report following come back in Leiden, including preliminary results. Conducting a sufficient number of interviews and collecting relevant data and material in Latin America, in order to write the Research Master’s thesis.

Blackboard will be used to post all the necessary information about the fieldwork.
