Visual Arts 1800-present: Art in the expanded field


Admission requirements

Same as admission requirements for the BA Art History. Reading skills in German are required.


This seminar focuses on new art developments in the 1950’s/60’s which expanded the field of art both conceptually and physically: Action Painting, Happening, Fluxus, Concept Art, Minimal Art, Land Art, Body Art, Pop Art, Nouveau Réalisme etc. The aim of the seminar is not only to present and discuss these art forms but also to look at how artists developed them further in the decades to follow, up to the present day (Performance, New Media, Installation Art etc.).

Course objectives

  • Being able to search, select and read/analyse literature on the subject of modern art movements in the 1950s and 1960s and being skilled in communicating research findings.

  • Having knowledge of and insight in art movements after 1945.

  • Being able to discriminate and name visual characteristics of individual objects from that period.

  • Being able to critically analyse and reflect upon literature in the domain of the history of modern art.

  • Experience in developing a hypothesis/research question.

  • Capable of doing individual research related to the topic of the seminar.

  • Possessing the skills to present (Powerpoint) research outcomes and to actively take part in class discussions.

  • Able to write a concise paper of about 3000 words, excl. notes and bibliography.

Mode of instruction

  • Seminar.

Assessment method

  • Oral presentation and course participation: 50% of final mark.

  • Paper: 50% of final mark.


Blackboard is used for course information etc.
