Linguistics 6: The Semantics of English

Admission Requirements

A pass mark for Linguistics 2 or a similar course.

Description

This course is concerned with the basic principles of lexical and sentence semantics as applied to modern English. Topics considered include notions such as entailment, polysemy, synonymy, presupposition and modality, the place of semantics within linguistics, and its relation to disciplines such as psychology and philosophy.

Course Objectives

Students are familiar with general semantic principles and are able to apply these to English.

Mode of Instruction

Two hour seminar per week.

Assessment

One in-term written assignment (30%), final written examination (70%).
