Description
Starting your studies is not easy! This course will help you get settled at LIACS and shows you how to best approach your studies by practicing effective and efficient study strategies. You are also introduced to several core academic skills: including presenting, collaborating, and writing.
Course objectives
After successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
evaluate their use of evidence-based study strategies within the different courses of their program.
apply presentation skills within a group presentation.
reflect on what contributes to good teamwork and on their own role in a team.
apply their knowledge of academic literature by finding academic sources in the field of their studies.
apply their knowledge of critical academic writing by writing a paper on the topic of the field of their studies using their own words and narrative.
apply their familiarity with the policy and regulations on fraud and plagiarism at the university, including on Generative AI, by correctly referencing sources in their work.
Schedule
In MyTimetable; you can find all course and programme schedules; allowing you to create your personal timetable. Activities for which you have enrolled via MyStudyMap will automatically appear in your timetable.
Additionally; you can easily link MyTimetable to a calendar app on your phone; and schedule changes will be automatically updated in your calendar. You can also choose to receive email notifications about schedule changes. You can enable notifications in Settings after logging in.

Assesment method
The course Studying and Presenting is completed through three assignments on study skills, collaborating and presenting, and writing, and one exam on writing. In addition, it is mandatory to be present at least 3 out of the 4 workshops.
In order to pass the course:
- All assignments need to be submitted, and for at least two out of the three assignments a 6 or higher needs to be obtained. One assignment can be failled but should receive at least a 4. A non-completed assignment receives a 0. The average final grade over the three assignments should be at least a 5.5.
- The exam needs to completed with at least a 5.5.
- Students need to participate in at least 3 out of the 4 workshops that are offered. Participate means: be present and actively engage during the workshop. Students can choose themselves which 3 workshops they join.
The final grade for the course is the average over the final grade for the assignments (50%) and the grade for the exam (50%).

The retake opportunities for the course are:
The exam has a retake opportunity in the form of a retake exam.
For the assignments, there is one opportunity to retake one failed or missed assignment if this is necessary in order to pass the course. It is only allowed to participate in the retake assignment if otherwise you do not have a passing grade for the assignments component.
For the workshops, if a student misses 2 out of the 4 workshops, a replacing assignment should be completed. If a student misses 3 or 4 workshops, it is not possible to pass the course.
When the results for the exam are published, it is also shared how the exam review takes place.

It is mandatory to enrol for all activities of a course that you are going to follow.
Your enrolment is only complete when you submit your course planning in the ‘Ready for enrolment’ tab by clicking ‘Send’.
Not being enrolled for an exam/resit means that you are not allowed to participate in the exam/resit.

Remarks
Software
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year; the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform; you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software; your laptop must meet certain system requirements; which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course. More information about the laptop requirements can be found on the student website.
