Admission requirements

This course is open to all students that have been admitted to the minor ‘Quantitative Biology’. Students are allowed to select this course when their major study programme is such that there is too much overlap content-wise with the courses ‘Elementary practical biology and methods for non-biologists’ and 'Elementary and practical mathematics for non-mathematicians'. Please contact the minor coordinator to determine whether you are eligible for this course.

Description

The student chooses in consultation and with approval of the lecturers a specific field in Life Science for which they will make a limited survey of major research questions in that field and the extent to and in which specific form(s) mathematical modelling has been applied to answer these questions. A concise written report is delivered at the end of the course that describes the results of the survey.

Course objectives

The student is trained to identify quickly major research questions in field and to search for scientific publications that employ mathematical modeling to answer (partially) some of these questions. They will not study the models in all mathematical detail, but are coached to get a global understanding of model assumptions and implications in view of the major questions that were identified. They are particularly encouraged to think of possibilities for a model-based approach towards answering partial questions that have not yet been explored.  
Final qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively identify major research questions in a field of Life Science

  • Ability to understand mathematical models in the literature in connection to research questions

  • Ability to identify to what extent specific models provide explanations or answers to particular research questions.

  • Ability to identify opportunities for quantitative, model-based approaches in research

  • Skilled in reporting concisely on a performed (limited) survey on model applications

Teaching method

Self study, with regular individual discussion and supervision sessions with one of the lecturers.

Assesment method

Writing of a concise report on results of the performed survey (30%), followed by an oral exam consisting of a discussion of the report by the student with the lecturers (70%).
