Arts and politics in Latin America

Course
2025-2026

Admission requirements

There are no special requirements

Description

This course deals with the political dimension of Latin American cultural expressions. We will look at a wide range of expressions like (performance) art, music, literature and film. How do these different expressions relate to what is happening in society? In what way do they dialogue with unjust distributions of power? The political order shapes these kind of distributions, and often systemic, economic, symbolic or social violence is linked to that process. How do artistic interventions relate to specific social orders?
To understand the link between arts and society we will study Latin-American visual, auditive, haptic and textual narratives in particular contexts. These context can vary from the aftermaths of the Chilean and Argentinean dictatorships, Mexican class violence, the power of Cuban protestsongs, Colombian poetry as testimony of the armed conflict, but as well the Dutch context itself. Work of Latin American migrant artists working in The Netherlands can also help us to reflect on unjustices. We will meet some of these artists and we will be working together on a videodocumentary about the political dimensions of a particular art work/ book/film/performance. The course offers an invitation to learn how to engage with the arts in a critical, productive and mature way. Through active learning methods and the use of close reading and interviewing, the student will be trained in doing interdisciplinary research in the field of politics and arts.
