Admission requirements
This course is only open to students of the LDE Master on the Governance of Migration and Diversity (GMD) with the exception of students following the LL.M. GMD legal track.
Description
This course provides students with an introduction to the legal dimension of migration and diversity governance. This includes international and European asylum law, European and regional migration law, and the protection of minorities under human rights law and EU non-discrimination law.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will have knowledge of key legal principles and regimes on international and European asylum law, migration law, and non-discrimination law and understand the relevance of these for the governance of migration and diversity. Furthermore, students can apply the law to concrete governance dilemmas.
More specifically, by the end of this course, students will be able to:
Identify the most important legal principles of international and European asylum law;
Identify the most important legal principles of EU migration law;
Identify the most important legal principles of EU non-discrimination law;
Understand the human rights dimension of the above areas of law;
Apply the above legal principles to concrete governance dilemmas.

Mode of instruction
Whenever possible, classes will be interactive. Some classes will consist mainly of lectures, others of seminars, but the majority of classes will consist partly of lectures and partly of interactive discussion of the course material.
The course requires from students that they come prepared to class by reading the obligatory course materials and formulating answers to the questions asked.

Written exam (100%).
Course assignments during the course (pass/fail)
During the course, students may be asked to hand in assignments in preparation for the seminars. Students will need to pass both the written exam and the assignments to pass the course.
Students who fail an assignment will be given the possibility to write another assignment. Students who fail the exam will have to resit the exam. The resit may consist of an oral instead of a written exam.

The examination syllabus consists of the required reading (literature) for the course, the course information guide and the subjects taught in the lectures and all other instructions which are part of the course.
