Students are admitted to the study abroad when they have finalised the first year of the BA African Studies.
This course is part of Study in Africa (exchange or internship).
This course is a guidance to research practice in African studies. That means that students experience multi methods research, and what it means to be an interdisciplinary researcher. It includes ethics and DataManagement. The students are guided by a team of supervisors, both in Leiden and in the host institution, with whom they discuss their research plan and who will take them stepwise through the different methods and phases of the research in the field. In this course we focus on qualitative methods and students are stimulated to use digital tools and work with visuals, audio, etc.
The student will be capable to do independent research in an environment that is relatively new to him/her.
The student will be capable to explain multi-methods research and its value.
The student will be capable to explain interdisciplinarity.
The student understands the process of doing research from writing a proposal to the final paper/report.

Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
A reading list will be made available before the start of te course and is part of the syllabus.
