Admission to the Research Master Archaeology programme.
Description
This course addresses advanced topics in critical heritage studies. It applies critical and social theory to rethink heritage in practice, and explores the relationship between communities and heritage issues.
We will study foundational concepts as they are applied to studying community, and challenges related to globalisation, environmental issues, sustainable development, and social inclusion.
Course objectives
Understanding and a working knowledge of both theoretical and practical approaches to central issues in the field of critical heritage studies and community engagement and participation;
Ability to critically engage with global challenges that underpin heritage debate, identity, and cultural heritage;
Understanding assumptions embedded in policy and in universal and globalised discourses and practices;
Ability to coordinate and lead groups;
Ability to encourage and conduct stimulating discussions as well as to give feedback to other students;
Ability to plan original research in or with communities that include innovative theoretical reflections and participatory methodologies;
Ability to connect broader themes in advanced heritage and museum studies to one's own RMA research questions.

Assessment method
Assignments (60%);
Presentation (30%);
Attendance and participation (10%).
All assignments must be submitted. All assignments have to be submitted through Brightspace, and submitted by the deadlines. Late submissions result in deducted grades as follows:
1-24 hrs late, -1.0
24-48 hrs late, -1.5
48-72 hrs late, -2.0
72-96 hrs late, -2.5
(all stated hours include weekends and holidays). Submissions more than 4 days late (including weekends and holidays) will not be accepted.
All assignments and presentations must fulfill the requirements specified for them on Brightspace. All assignments and presentations have to be passed to complete the course, and the passing grade for any assignment or presentation is 5.0 minimum.
Grades for assignments and presentations can be compensated with each other in the final course grade, providing they were completed by the deadlines.
Attendance and active participation in every session is compulsory. If you are unable to attend a class due to personal circumstances, you have to inform your study adviser and course examiner in advance, and provide documentation that supports your case. The examiner will determine if and how the missed session can be compensated by an additional assignment.
The final course grade is the weighted grade of all assessment parts.
Only one assignment (not presentations) can be retaken, and only if all assignments were submitted by the deadlines and as legitimate attempts to pass the assignment, and only if other course requirements were fulfilled, such as attendance and participation.
This retake is only possible if the final course grade is insufficient (below 5.5). In the case of a retake, the examiner may assign a new topic and new deadline.
All assessment parts must be completed in the same academic year. No partial marks can be carried over into following years.
