Elective course in MSc Chemistry, MSc Life Science and Technology
For students with a BSc in MST, LST or equivalent who have completed at least one course theoretical chemistry and a course on spectroscopy.
This course addresses results of both dynamics calculations and experiments on molecule-surface reactions, based on recent papers from the scientific literature. Where possible, a comparison is made where results are available from both approaches. Subjects include: the effect of the collision energy and the initial rovibrational state of the reacting molecule on the dissociative chemisorption of diatomic molecules (e.g. H2, N2, and O2) and a polyatomic molecule (CH4), the effect of "alignment" and "orientation" on the dissociative chemisorption of diatomic molecules (H2 and NO), and the final state distribution” in Eley-Rideal reactions.
After the course, students:
are able to read and analyse specialist literature within the field of molecule-surface reaction dynamics
are able to describe the state-of-the-art of experiments and theory in the field
are able to interrelate theoretical and experimental work done on similar systems
can present orally a resume of a scientific article from the field with aid of presentation software (e.g. MS PowerPoint) highlighting crucial aspects and including relevant details
can articulate critical questions and accurate answers about the contents of such scientific articles
can explain various types of motivations used to justify research performed in this field
