Persian Language and Culture 1.
This course goes in parallel with Media Persian, both courses must be taken simultaneously.

Description

This course is a continuation of Persian Language and Culture 1 with an emphasis on more advanced grammar of Persian. In this course we will further discuss the form and the theory of Persian syntax. The vocabulary will be expanded through writing and translation exercises. The course will expand on the basic knowledge of Persian culture that students have acquired in Persian Language and Culture 1, and will address cultural aspects of Iran using advanced and academic texts in Persian.

Course objectives

Acquiring a thorough understanding of the principles of advanced Persian grammar and building a comprehensive vocabulary. On this basis, at the end of this course, students will be able to read, analyse and translate texts in standard written Persian on various topics and translate these texts. The spoken and written Persian is further addressed in the courses Conversation Persian 1 and Text Persian 1 that are also offered in the second semester.

Mode of instruction

Seminar

Attendance and active participation are obligatory for seminars. Students are required to prepare for and attend all sessions. The convenors need to be informed without delay of any classes missed for a good reason (i.e. due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, family issues, problems with residence permits, the Dutch railways in winter, etc.). In these cases it is up to the discretion of the convener(s) of the course whether or not the missed class will have to be made up with an extra assignment. The maximum of such absences during a semester is two. Being absent without notification and/or more than two times can result in exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.

  • Written exam with short open questions and essay question

  • Written midterm exam: 30%

  • Written final exam: 50%

  • Presentation: 20%

Resit

There is no resit for the presentation. There is a resit exam for the midterm and the final, which will count for 80%.

Inspection and feedback

If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.
