Science Communication: Archaeology in the 21st century

Bachelor Archaeology first year obtained.

Description

The course will focus on training you how to communicate research to a variety of audiences, from communicating to an academic audience to communicating to the general public.
We will also discuss why such communication is important, as well as some of the ethical issues surrounding the dissemination of science.

You will:

  • learn about some of the various ways of communicating science, to both a scientific audience as well as a non-scientific audience

  • learn how to reflect on current practices

  • be given the opportunity to practice several different communication media with a diversity of teachers.

Course set-up

Weekly meetings, up to 4 hours each with various practical hand-on exercises either during the class or after class.

Course objectives

After the course, the student has:

  • Practiced several different techniques of research communication aimed at both an academic as well as a non-academic audience;

  • Gained insight into the concept of popular science and science communication to a wider public;

  • Gained insight into the ethics of science communication;

  • Gained the ability to write and deliver “elevator pitches” and significance statements for academic research;

  • Learned how to use some of the recently developed ways of communicating science to the public (e.g. podcasts, blogposts, wikipages).

Mode of instruction

  • Lectures;

  • Tutorials.

Course load

  • 28 hours of lectures and tutorials (1 ec);

  • Assignments (3.5 ec);

  • Final assessment (0.5 ec).

Assessment method

  • Participation in weekly assignments (20%);

  • Participation in weekly peer reviews and class attendance (20%);

  • Final assignment prepared during weekly assignments (60%).

A retake is only possible for the final essay, and only if all other requirements have been met, including attendance and submission of all assignments.

Reading list

A reading list will be distributed 2 weeks prior to the start of the class. Make sure you are registered for this Brightspace module in time.

Registration

Registration via uSis is mandatory.

  • The Administration Office will register all BA1 students for their tutorials (not lectures; register via uSis!).

  • BA2, BA3, MA/MSc and RMA/RMSc students are required to register for all lectures and tutorials well in time.

  • The Administration Office registers all students for their exams, students are not required to do this in uSis.

  • Compulsory attendance. Attendance will be administrated by each lecturer. Students can miss no more than 1 class;
