Reactivity in Organic Chemistry (ROC)


Core course in MSc Chemistry – Chemical Biology, elective course MSc Chemistry, MSc Life Science and Technology


The course provides the theoretical background necessary for in-depth understanding of the organic reaction mechanisms. The course will focus on the thermodynamics and kinetics as applied in organic chemistry, the theory of transition state and the role of stereo-electronic factors and conformational equilibrium for the product distribution in organic reactions.

Course objectives

After the course the student should be able to:

  • Understand reaction mechanisms of the most common transformations in organic chemistry;

  • Understand how orbital interactions govern reactivity;

  • Understand how stereoelectronic effects determine the reactivity;

  • Understand how conformational behavior influences reactivity;

  • Understand pericyclic reactions;

  • Predict regio- and stereoselectivity of common organic reactions;

Expected Background

Knowledge of organic chemistry at the level of OC-II (BSc in Chemistry, Molecular Science and Technology, Life Science and Technology or a related discipline).
