Description

This courses introduces the linguistic subfield of Phonology. Phonology deals with the knowledge and representations of the sound structure of language. The sound structure involves phonemes, features, syllables, stress and tone. These basic concepts will be introduced and the techniques of a phonological analysis will be explained and practised in small workgroups.

Course objectives

Upon sucessful completion of the course, students are able to demonstrate elementary knowledge of:

  • features and their role in phonological processes and sound inventories

  • syllable structure

  • stress systems

  • tone

They are also able to, at an elementary level:

  • analyze phonological alternations

  • syllabify sound sequences

  • analyze stress systems

  • Lectures: 13 hours

  • Workgroups (compulsory): 13 hours

Assessment method

Assessment

weekly homework assignments. These have to be handed in weekly in order to be admitted to the midterm exam.

midterm take home exam containing short open questions
final exam containing short open questions and essay questions

Weighing

midterm exam: 30%
final exam: 70%
In order to pass the grade for the final exam has to be 5.5 or higher.

Resit

A resit is possible for the final exam.

Reviews will be organized on an individual basis within 30 days after publication of the exam results.
