Inleiding Middelegyptisch en hiërogliefenschrift and Reading Middle Egyptian

Description

This module provides an introduction to Old Egyptian with the aim of expanding language proficiency in—and grammatical knowledge of—Old and Middle Egyptian texts. Religious (Pyramid and Coffin Texts) and Secular (autobiographical) texts will be read, primarily dating to the Old Kingdom.

Course objectives

To develop a firm knowledge of the oldest phases of the ancient Egyptian language, to familiarise students with Old Egyptian grammar and vocabulary, to expose students to varying genres of texts, and to develop skills in using a wide array of resources (grammars, dictionaries, reference literature, etc.)

Seminar; compulsory attendance.

Course Load

The Total study load for this course is 10EC’s (1EC=28 hours; total hours expected: 280 study hours)

  • Attending classes: 26hrs (2hrs per class, 13 classes)

  • Preparing for classes: 52hrs (4hrs per class)

  • Preparation for mid-term: 12hrs

  • Preparation for final: 50hrs

Assessment method

Mid-term exam: transliteration, translation, and analysis of an unseen Old Egyptian text, with dictionary (30%)

Final exam: transliteration, translation, and grammatical analysis of unseen texts, one of which is Old Egyptian (70%)

Weighting

The final grade is determined by a weighted average of both exams.

Resit

A resit is only available for the final exam; the mid-term cannot be retaken.

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
