Description

This course serves as an introduction to the Phonology, Phonetics, and Morphology of the Portuguese language. Readings and lectures will discuss the distinctions between phonetics and phonology and examine the interfaces between phonetics, phonology, and morphology. Topics covered include phonological opposition and alternation, phonotactics, phonetic transcription (using the IPA), nominal/verbal inflection and derivation, and variation as it relates to all three areas of study.

Course objectives

  • Students will be able to distinguish between and describe the principal areas of study in each area (Phonology, Phonetics, Morphology).

  • Students will be able to perform phonetic and phonologic transcriptions of words in Portuguese using the IPA.

  • Students will be able to describe basic morphological rules and processes in Portuguese

  • Students will be able to apply the main concepts in phonology, phonetics, and morphology to carry out basic linguistic analyses in Portuguese.

Course Load

Total course load is 140 hours:

  • Attending lectures and seminars: 26 hrs;

  • Preparing exams: 20 hrs;

  • Taking exams: 4 hrs;

  • Reading and preparation for lectures; completing assignments: 90 hrs.

  • Final Exam (40%);

  • Assignments (20%).

Both written examinations will include closed questions (for example multiple choice), open ended questions and short essay questions.

The final grade for the course will be established by determining the weighted average.

Resit

Only students with less than a 6 will be allowed to take the resit (for the relevant component).

Exam review

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
