Admission requirements

Portuguese 4 or equivalent (contact tutor for guidance).


This language course aims to develop students’ knowledge of formal varieties of both oral and written Brazilian Portuguese and to help them gain confidence in oral and written communication skills at an advanced level, with an emphasis on writing skills of longer pieces in a variety of contexts and targets (e.g., argumentative texts, critical essays, etc.), as well as oral skills mindful of issues of presentation, cultural awareness, attention to register, etc. This is an interactive course in which a variety of authentic materials are used.

Course objectives

This course covers four key skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Authentic materials will be used in the development of communication skills through practical written and oral exercises (individual and group-based).

Total Hours for the Course: 140

  • Seminar attendance: 42 hours (6 hours per week x 7 weeks);

  • Assignments and preparation: 42 hours (6 hours per week x 7 weeks);

  • Tests and Test Preparation: 28 hours;

  • Composition: 28 hours.

Assessment method

Final Exam (40%) (1-2 hours);
Assignments (20%);
Final Essay (20%);
Final Oral Exam (20%) (10 minutes).

Written exams include linguistic exercises (e.g., fill-the-gap, short answer, etc.), written comprehension, listening comprehension, and short essay.

Oral assessments: short presentation and question/answer session

Resit for relevant component: written exam/oral.
