Description

This course aims at the development of communicative skills, with a special focus on listening and speaking skills. The expanding of cultural knowledge about China and its people is an integral part of the course.

Course objectives

This course aims at the development of communicative skills, with a special focus on listening and speaking skills. It also introduces frequently used basic grammatical structures in order to solidify the learner’s knowledge of Chinese grammar. As its precedent courses (Chinese for beginners and pre-intermediate Chinese), the introduction of cultural knowledge about China and its people is an integral part of the course.
Learners will acquire communicative skills enabling them to describe experiences and events. They will be able to organize and present their viewpoints on familiar topics. (roughly corresponding to CEFR A2-B1 level)
Learners will be able to read and understand short, simple texts on familiar matters containing the highest frequency vocabulary. They will also be understand everyday material such as brochures, short official documents, written advertisements or announcements. (roughly corresponding to CEFR A2-B1 level)
Learners will be able to write 200 Chinese simplified characters (around 1000 after this course). They will be able to write simple connected text on familiar topics, or a letter describing personal experiences. (roughly corresponding to CEFR A2 level)
Learners will acquire 320 (approximately 1200 after the third course) vocabulary items. After this course learners will master basic Chinese grammar constructions and expressions, which is sufficient for basic daily conversation.

Attending lectures and tutorials is compulsory. If you are not able to attend a lecture or tutorial, please inform the tutor of the course. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the final exam or essay.
