Admission requirements

A basic background in syntax is a prerequisite (preferably a course on government and binding).

Description

In this course the Minimalist framework is discussed from its foundations to the technical implementations. Comparison is made with the government and binding framework. Topics include argument structure, case, phrase structure, movement theory, locality, feature checking and economy. All topics are discussed with pre-minimalist approaches in mind,in a comparative manner with the government and binding framework.

Course objectives

  1. Students learn the basics of the Minimalist framework of syntax, in comparison with the government and binding framework.

  2. Students learn the basics of argumentation within syntatic theory.

  • time spent on attending lectures and seminars: 26 hours

  • time for studying the compulsory literature: 100 hours

  • time for homework and term paper: 154 hours

Assessment Method

  • Homework 50%

  • Final paper 50%
