Admission requirements
Recommended prior knowledge: Studying and presenting.
Description
Though the domain-specific content of computer science forms the bulk of the bachelor, soft skills (or transferable skills) obtained in these years are at least as important. For example, one can think of (academic) writing, presenting, finding and judging sources and setting up and reporting on experiments. These skills are not only valuable in an academic career, but in any later environment in which some sort of communication is expected. In this course, we will approach these skills in an interactive manner.
Course objectives
During the course, students should demonstrate proficiency and show growth in the following areas:
Writing and structuring texts for scientific and non-scientific audiences, such as research papers, monographs and articles
Presenting scientific contents to scientific and non-scientific audiences
Finding sources and assessing their quality and relevance
Knowledge of the research process from formulating a research question and creating a theoretical framework to setting up experiments and analyzing their results
Soft skills broadly applicable in professional environments, such as problem solving, analytical skills and creativity
Interpersonal skills necessary for collaboration in a team, including the ability to give, receive and process feedback
Schedule
In MyTimetable; you can find all course and programme schedules; allowing you to create your personal timetable. Activities for which you have enrolled via MyStudyMap will automatically appear in your timetable.
Additionally; you can easily link MyTimetable to a calendar app on your phone; and schedule changes will be automatically updated in your calendar. You can also choose to receive email notifications about schedule changes. You can enable notifications in Settings after logging in.
Questions? Watch the video; read the instructions; or contact the ISSC helpdesk.
Note: Joint Degree students from Leiden/Delft need to combine information from both the Leiden and Delft MyTimetables to see a complete schedule. This video explains how to do it.
Teaching method
There are 3-hour workshops, consisting of plenary parts and breakout sessions.
Attendance at the workshops is mandatory.
Assesment method
The course is graded pass/fail.
Students should attend and actively participate in at least 12 out of the 15 sessions, meaning that no more than 3 sessions should be missed. If 4 or 5 sessions are missed, there is an opportunity to compensate by doing extra coursework. If more than 5 sessions are missed, the student fails the course.
During the course, students will work on a personal portfolio, which is to be handed in towards the end of the academic year. This portfolio will be used to assess (the growth of) the student during the course.
Resit, review & feedback
For missing 4 or 5 sessions, an additional assignment will be required to compensate. Missing more than 5 sessions results in failing the course.
For each deliverable that is to be handed in throughout the course, there will be an opportunity to redo it.
Reading list

Registration
As a student; you are responsible for enrolling on time through MyStudyMap.
In this short video; you can see step-by-step how to enrol for courses in MyStudyMap.
Extensive information about the operation of MyStudyMap can be found here.
There are two enrolment periods per year:
Enrolment for the fall opens in July
Enrolment for the spring opens in December
See this page for more information about deadlines and enrolling for courses and exams.
Note:
It is mandatory to enrol for all activities of a course that you are going to follow.
Your enrolment is only complete when you submit your course planning in the ‘Ready for enrolment’ tab by clicking ‘Send’.
Not being enrolled for an exam/resit means that you are not allowed to participate in the exam/resit.
Contact
For substantive questions, contact the lecturers (listed in the right information bar). For questions about enrolment, admission, etc., contact the Education Administration Office.
Remarks
If you wish to carry over partial results from the previous year, please contact the lecturers ASAP to discuss whether this is possible.
Software
Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year; the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform; you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software; your laptop must meet certain system requirements; which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course. More information about the laptop requirements can be found on the student website.
