Linguistics 5B: English Words and Phrases: Structure and Interaction

Vak
2025-2026

Admission requirements

Pass mark for Linguistics 3. A pass mark for Linguistics 4 is strongly recommended.

Description

This course focuses on the structure of English words (morphology) and on how it interacts with other components of the English language, such as syntax (sentence structure) and phonology (sound structure). This will include examining phenomena at the boundary between morphology and syntax, as well as how word formation phenomena are sensitive to sound structure and vice versa. The course will also pay attention to the representation of word structure in the minds of language users and will consider a number of theoretical perspectives on the morphology of English.

Course objectives

After this course, students have:

  • become acquainted with a range of morphological phenomena and processes and how they interact with syntactic and/or phonological phenomena and processes

  • developed the ability to analyze phenomena at the morphology-syntax interface and/or the morphology-phonology interface

  • acquired basic knowledge of a number of theoretical perspectives on the morphology of English
