BA French Language and Culture or BA in another modern language.
Students from other tracks of Literary Studies or Media Studies are welcome provided they have a good reading and listening proficiency in French. In that case, the oral presentation and paper will be in English or Dutch. Please contact the teacher beforehand for admission.
Description
Plus de quarante ans après sa mort, Georges Perec (1936-1982) est toujours très lu et très étudié. Son oeuvre embrasse une multitude de genres : roman, essai, poésie mais aussi cinéma - et il les a tous profondément renouvelés. Dans ce séminaire, nous étudierons son œuvre romanesque mais aussi ses essais et un de ses films. Perec est d’abord connu comme membre prééminent d’Oulipo : dans des romans comme La disparition et La vie mode d’emploi, les règles formelles le mènent à une grande virtuosité verbale. Cette expérimentation verbale l’a mené à de nouvelles formes d’autobiographie, à travers le roman (W ou le souvenir d’enfance), l’essai (Espèces d’espaces) et le cinéma (Les lieux d’une fugue).
Course objectives
Connaissance d’un choix représentatif des oeuvres de Perec
Connaissance du contexte littéraire et historique de cette oeuvre
Familiarisation avec la littérature critique sur ce sujet et sur les œuvres étudiées
Capacité de faire une recherche autonome sur une question dérivant du corpus
Capacité de communiquer ses résultats de recherche dans un exposé oral et un travail écrit , en français de niveau C1-C2.

Weighing
The final mark for the course is established by (i) determination of the weighted average combined with (ii) additional requirements: the grade of the final paper ought to be sufficient (= 6).
Resit
There will be a resit for the final paper but not for the other components.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.
