Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the Greek alphabet before the start of the course (see Reading list). No further requirements.
Description
This course aims to introduce students to the entire grammar of Ancient Greek in one 10-EC semester course, with a focus on basic syntax, phonology and especially morphology. At the same time, students learn how to explain apparent phonological and morphological irregularities in Greek using (historical) linguistic methods, which allows them to compare Greek data to those from related Indo-European languages. The student’s preparation is essential for successful participation in this course. We will use Mastronarde’s* Introduction to Attic Greek*, supplemented by a course syllabus focusing on historical linguistic aspects. During separate reading classes, selected topics from the historical grammar of Greek will be treated.
Course objectives
Knowledge: phonology, morphology, syntax and basic vocabulary of Ancient Greek
skills: be able to provide a morphological analysis of Ancient Greek words
skills: be able to translate a simple annotated Attic Greek text into correct English
skills: be able to accentuate Ancient Greek words by applying productive rules
insight: understand the relation between spelling and phonology in Ancient Greek, including accentuation
insight: be able to explain irregularities in Ancient Greek grammar with reference to historical linguistic developments

Written midterm examination with short open questions

Weighing
The midterm exam equals 40% of the final mark.
The final exam equals 60% of the final mark.
The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average. To pass the course, the weighted average of the partial grades must be 5.5 or higher.
Additional requirement: the grade for the final exam must be at least 5.
If the resit is taken, it equals 100% of the final mark.
Resit
There is one resit option whose grade equals 100% of the final grade.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will be organized.

Students who do not yet know the Greek alphabet should study Unit 1 until section 4 (p. 13) before the course starts.
