Students are admitted to the study abroad when they have finalised the first year of the BA African Studies.
Description
This course is connected to the Study in Africa.
This course is a guidance to research practice in African studies. That means that students experience multi methods research, and what it means to be an interdisciplinary researcher. It includes ethics and DataManagement. The students are guided by a team of supervisors, both in Leiden and in the host institution, with whom they discuss their research plan and who will take them stepwise through the different methods and phases of the research in the field. In this course we focus on qualitative methods.
Course objectives
The student will be capable to do independent research in an environment that is relatively new to them.
The student will be capable to explain multi-methods research and its value.
The student will be capable to explain interdisciplinarity.
The student understands the process of doing research from writing a proposal to the final paper/report.

This course is a combination of online lectures and online tutorials.

Assessment & weighing
Participation and contact with supervisors: 20%
End paper: 80%
Resit
The end paper counts for 100% of the resit.
Inspection and feedback
How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

Remarks
If a student decides to study abroad at the NIMAR, a similar course to this one, called 'Ethnographic Research', is offered, which can be taken instead if approved by the Board of Examiners.
