Description
The need for more hereogenuous data and quality data for better AI outcomes is a non trivial issue. This is compounded by the need for control over digital data, which has become a critical societal and business concern. This course introduces students to the European and international public policies that affect data-ownership and control, data-science and AI. During the course, core concepts of regulatory governance in the EU will be introduced. The developments are looked at in a historic and comparative perspective. We consider how the European regulatory model differs from other models and how regulatory governance models relate to ethical and cultural notions. We will compare different digital governance models and look at their convergence and divergence. During the course, the students will engage with the topic of regulatory governance, by implementing a review that serves to develop a research proposal on a governance-related problems in data science.
Course objectives
At the end of the course, students are able to:
list core concepts of regulatory governance in the EU;
analyse regulary requirements in a historic, prospective and comparative ways at global level;
list basic mechanisms of changes in regulatory settings;
link the analysis of regulatory goverance to ethical considerations;
implement a review on an issue of regulatory compliance;
present a review in academic format.

Mode of instruction
Individual research and group work methods as well as instruction on general concepts.
Assessment method
Group assignments (30%): presentations in class reflecting on the literature
Individual presentation (10%): presentation of own research
Individual paper (final exam) (60%)- presentation of own research
The grade is calculated as the weighted average.
A resit of group assignments is possible within three weeks after the first deadline. This will be graded independently from the first assignment.
A resit of the individual paper (final exam) is possible with a resit five weeks after the first exam. This wil also be graded independenty from the first exam (paper).
The individual paper is graded on the basis of:
use of concepts of regulatory governance in the digital domain (data science and AI) (10%);
use of comparative methods of inquiry in access and control issues over digital data (10%);
inclusion of relevant ethical and political notions (10%);
clarity of the methodology followed on the implementation of the individual review (10%);
academic and professional style (10%);
relevance (10%).

Starting from the 2024/2025 academic year, the Faculty of Science will use the software distribution platform Academic Software. Through this platform, you can access the software needed for specific courses in your studies. For some software, your laptop must meet certain system requirements, which will be specified with the software. It is important to install the software before the start of the course.
