Indonesian 3 is the third part of the intensive language course for beginners where students continue to learn Indonesian Grammar and vocabulary, as well as cultural knowledge that is necessary for effective Language Use in this language Indonesian 3 consists of three closely linked components: Grammar, Vocabulary and Language Use. The Grammar class focuses on acquiring knowledge of Indonesian grammar and the practical ability to apply this knowledge in oral and written discourse. The Language Use class is devoted to acquiring practical competence in Indonesian by means of exercises in conversation, individual oral presentation, comprehension of texts, and writing skills. Indonesian 3 is an integrated whole, both components of which mutually support each other. It is not possible to follow the Grammar, Vocabulary or Language Use classes separately.

Course objectives

Enhancing active and passive proficiency (Indonesian level about B1), with special attention to enlarging vocabulary and enhancing insight in different language uses. Because the new vocabulary is provided in context the student will gain a better insight in subtle semantic differences. Also the student will gain a better insight in how Indonesian is used in Indonesia. The level aimed at in the European Reference Frame is B1.

The timetables are available through My Timetable.

Mode of instruction

  • Seminar (three two hour seminars every week)

Attendance and participation are obligatory. Classes missed for a good reason (to the discretion of the conveners and to be discussed BEFORE the class takes place) will have to be made up with an extra assignment. Absence of more than 9 classes automatically implies exclusion from the term end exams. Being absent without notification can result in a lower grade or exclusion from the term end exams and a failing grade for the course.

The course contains three sessions per week that are obligatory for BA SSEAS students and advised for external students. In case of logistic clashes, external students should contact the coordinator in a timely manner. Missed classes will have to be made up with an extra assignment.

Assessment method

The assessment of Indonesian 3 consists of the following elements:

  • Weekly assignments (for a total 20% of the overall mark)

  • Two vocabulary tests (for a total of 20% of the overall mark). The first test is taken during the mid-term period; the second test at the end of the course.

  • An oral examination at the end of the course (20% of the overall mark).

  • A written examination at the end of the course (30% of the overall mark).

  • Participation (attendance and in-class performance) (for total 10% of the overall mark)

  • To pass the course, students must have contributed actively to at least 75% of class meetings and receive an overall mark for the course of 5.50 (= 6) or higher.

See above.

A resit exam is possible only for the written examination at the end of the course (30%). The course is an integrated whole. All categories must be completed in the same academic year. No partial marks can be carried over into following years.
