2023-2024

Admission requirements

This course is mandatory for and restricted to students who do the Minor ‘Computational approach to Disease Signaling and Drug Targets’ (CADSDT; the entire Minor or only Part 1) or the Elective Module DSDT. The same admission criteria apply to this course as for the respective afore mentioned programs.

Description

This course will cover the field of biomarker discovery and the application of biomarkers in drug development and patient care to enable personalized medicine. We discuss the use of high-dimensional molecular profiling technologies such as metabolomics and proteomics in conjunction with computational and state-of-the-art statistical approaches to identify, characterize and interpret biomarkers. The use of these particular techniques and approaches can be considered as systems approaches as they aim to understand biological system-specific changes associated with disease and pharmacological drug action. Examples of applications of biomarkers for diagnostics, disease progression and drug treatment response are presented. At the end of this course the student will have developed a broad overview of different approaches and technologies to discover and apply biomarkers in drug development and patient care.

Course Objectives

  1. Understanding of the scientific concepts underlying the research field of biomarker research and their application in drug development and personalized medicine.
  2. Understanding of state-of-the-art biomarker discovery approaches and experimental approaches in the field of biomarker research.
  3. Understanding of key data analysis and modeling methods used in the field of biomarker research
