Admission requirements

Admission to the MA International Relations, track European Union Studies. Or the European Politics and Society Joint Master Programme.

Description

This course aims at analysing EU policies and initiatives in the field of Justice and Home Affairs and at understanding the processes of their development. The course will engage participants in an in-depth study of the different aspects of the “Area of Freedom, Security, and Justice” (AFSJ): JHA policy concepts, actors involved in this field, policy-making processes, cooperation mechanisms and theoretical frameworks allowing us to understand this area. Among other topics, the course will address the European Arrest Warrant, the Dublin System, and the underlying mechanism of mutual recognition. The course has been designed to provide course participants with the necessary tools to take informed positions in academic and policy-oriented debates about the AFSJ.

Course objectives

Having successfully completed the course, course participants will be familiar with the main theoretical, political and legal questions that arise in the context of the AFSJ. In terms of skills, course participants will be able to find sources (judgments, secondary legislation) and to identify the important elements of these sources. The Moot Court cases furthermore enables them to use their academic skills, by applying researched knowledge to specific cases and it allows them to train their pleading skills by presenting their arguments in a fictitious court case.

Timetable

The timetables are available through My Timetable.

Mode of instruction

Lectures and group assignments.

Assessment method

Assessment

  • Participation in a moot court (30%);

  • Research paper (70%). The paper will only be marked if the course participant has attended the seminars.

Weighing

The final mark for the course is established by determining the weighted average.

Resit

A resit assessment is open to those who failed the entire course. It is not possible to retake the Moot Court or the paper assignment alone if one has passed the course.

Deadlines

The paper deadlines will be announced with the assignment. Points will be deducted for failure to comply with the exam deadline as follows: for up to and including 24 hours, no points will be deducted; for up to and including 48 hours, 1 point will be deducted; for up to and including 72 hours, 2 points will be deducted. Exams that are submitted more than 72 hours after the deadline, even if trivial, will not be marked and thus receive 0 points. Excuses other than approved official applications for mitigating circumstances will not be accepted.

Word limit

Announced word limits are absolute. Points will be deducted for failure to comply with this requirement as follows: For up to and including 5% above the word limit (even if trivial), 1 point will be deducted; for up to and including 10% above the word limit, 2 points will be deducted. Assignments that overstep the word count by more than 10% will not be marked and will thus receive 0 points.

Feedback and inspection

Detailed feedback will be given on each individual paper. How and when a review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organised.
