Sociaal Beleid in Latijns-Amerika

Toegangseisen

De cursus is open voor studenten uit de BA Latin American Studies, de BA International Studies die de Area Latin America volgen en de studenten van de minors Latin America Studies en Brazilian Studies. Voor andere studenten: (enige) kennis van de regio is wenselijk, de cursus ‘Inleiding in de Moderne Geschiedenis van Latijns-Amerika I’ uit het eerste semester wordt aangeraden.

Beschrijving

Vanaf de eeuwwisseling heeft de regio Latijns-Amerika een periode van economische bloei meegemaakt. De gunstige economie in combinatie met een golf van linkse regimes hebben geresulteerd in een grote sociale agenda, met meer geldmiddelen en een grotere rol voor de staat en regionale samenwerking. Mede hierdoor zijn veel Latijns-Amerikanen uit de armoede gestapt en is ook vooruitgang geboekt op andere sociale vraagstukken zoals onderwijs, gezondheidszorg en sociale zekerheid. Echter, meer recent kampt de regio met economische recessie, met sociale onrust en politieke instabiliteit tot gevolg. Al deze ontwikkelingen hebben invloed op het beleid dat Latijns-Amerikaanse overheden voeren rondom belangrijke sociale vraagstukken. Aan de hand van de centrale thema’s binnen sociaal beleid, wordt in deze cursus aandacht besteed aan de overeenkomsten en verschillen in het beleid dat gevoerd wordt rondom gemeenschappelijke sociale problemen zoals migratie, gezondheidszorg, onderwijs en interculturaliteit.

Leerdoelen

  • Het kunnen benoemen van de sociale vraagstukken die centraal staan in de Latijns-Amerikaanse regio.

  • Kennis verwerven van de factoren die kenmerkend zijn voor sociale vraagstukken, los van de nationale context.

  • Inzicht krijgen in de verschillen in beleid die door de nationale overheden gevoerd wordt rondom eenzelfde sociale vraagstuk.

Transferable skills die in deze cursus geoefend worden zijn:

Weging

Het eindcijfer voor de cursus komt tot stand door de bepaling van het gewogen gemiddelde op basis van deelcijfers.

Herkansing

De herkansing voor de presentatie(s) is een schriftelijk verslag (30%).
De herkansing voor het tentamen betreft een schriftelijk tentamen (70%).
De herkansing is alleen mogelijk mits het eindcijfer (presentatie + tentamen) een 5 of lager is.

Inzage en nabespreking

Nadat de resultaten zijn bekendgemaakt, kan op verzoek van de student een afspraak met de docent worden gemaakt om het tentamen in te zien en individueel te bespreken.

De aanwezigheid tijdens hoor- en werkcolleges is verplicht. Er mogen maximaal 3 bijeenkomsten gemist worden. Afhankelijk van de mate van overschrijding van dat maximum, kan de docent besluiten de student aanvullende opdrachten op te leggen of toegang tot de tentaminering te weigeren.
