Description

This course builds upon the first year course Introduction to International Relations. It explores various theoretical approaches to international relations with a focus on the nature of the international system, the dynamics of global governance (international cooperation, norms and institutions, rule compliance) and the dynamics of global change (new forms of governance, anti-globalization, the rise and fall of great powers).

Course Objectives

Objective 1: To deepen students’ understanding of key issues and dynamics in international relations.
Objective 2: To develop students’ ability to use theories of international relations to think critically and to identify patterns and processes ‘behind the headlines.’

Mode of Instruction

All lectures and assigned readings will be in English.

Readings

Readings will be drawn entirely from journal articles and book chapters accessible online from the university library, plus other materials from the internet. All readings must be completed during the week for which they are assigned.

Critical information about the course is posted on Brightspace, including the syllabus and all announcements. All students should regularly consult their email account linked to Brightspace.

Assessment Method

The first exam and the retake exam will be composed of multiple choice questions (worth 40% of the grade) and open answer questions (worth 60% of the grade).
The time and location of inspection and debriefing of the exam will be announced via Brightspace no later than the publication of the grades.
