In a turbulent world, it is important that managers and entrepreneurs, but also professionals, specialists and lawyers, have the right knowledge and competences to permanently adapt companies to changing circumstances. Today's success does not automatically mean tomorrow's success. Socio-cultural, political, technological and economic trends influence customer preferences, as well as the behavior of competitors. A competitive advantage is therefore always temporary, so companies must be constantly on the move.
This course covers the conceptual framework of strategic management and leadership. It discusses the nature of strategy, strategic analysis prior to the formulation of strategy, as well as the implications of implementation of strategy. The emphasis is on better understanding the focus on strategic management, the core concepts, through practical exercise on international business cases.
Goals of the course
Get acquainted with the principles of the theory and practice of strategic management and leadership. After this course, the student is able to analyze the external environment of an organization based on strategic management models and understand how strategies arise and develop further. The student will also be able to recognize strategic problems in a practical situation (case), analyze them and come up with solutions. All this is reflected in a case analysis to be written in a group. Every week the students have to study cases. A final version of the case analysis must be submitted at the end of the course.
After completing the course you can:
Explaining what strategic management and the strategic management process entail, distinguishing between different perspectives on formulating a strategy in the context of analysis and implementation;
Apply the most basic terms and concepts of the field to different case studies from practice and formulate solutions from them;
Analyse the general environment and the competitive environment and evaluate resulting strategies;
Apply the resource-based view of strategy analysis and establish a relationship with the performance of organizations;
Identify and formulate 'business-level' and 'corporate-level' strategies;
Explain the role of strategic leadership and corporate governance in the implementation of strategy;
Argue positions taken on harvard case method case studies using basic models, concepts and theories about strategic management.

For the exam, at least the grade 5.0 must be obtained. The written exam concerns the final test of the course and is the only part of the partial tests that can be retested.
The sub-tests 'case analyses in a group' and 'participation during the working groups' cannot be retested. The grades of the closed parts can be taken into account for the resit, but not for the following year (partial grades will therefore only remain valid during the academic year).

The exam material includes the mandatory literature, the prescribed cases and scientific articles and what has been discussed during lectures, working groups and during any other forms of education.
