The examination and, if indicated, the teaching of the following units of study can only be taken if the examinations of the preceding units of study have been passed of the courses Indo-European linguistics I and Indo-European linguistics II.
In this course, we will read and discuss a set of articles and book chapters on a particular theme in comparative Indo-European linguistics. We will pay attention, first of all, to the argumentation of the authors of the articles, and to the validity of their arguments. Secondly, we will discuss the formal organisation of the articles: how are the facts presented, how explicit is the argumentation, how does the author use references and footnotes, etc.
The main objective of the course is to learn how to critically read scholarly publications on Indo-European. Students will further learn how to summarize and analyze the argumentation in a scholarly publication.
The timetables are available through My Timetable.
Mode of instruction
The following elements form part of the assessment of this course:
Preparation and active participation (pass/fail)
Assignments as part of the seminars (35%)
Final paper (65%)
The final grade consists of a weighted average of the above components. For each missed or unprepared class they are expected to hand in a 500 word critical summary of the literature that was discussed during that class.
The “Final paper” can be improved and resubmitted once if it was a) handed in before the original deadline and b) the grade for it is insufficient. The assignments during the course cannot be resat.
To pass the course, the overall grade and the grade for the “Final paper” must be sufficient (6 or higher) and the student must have passed the “Preparation and active participation” requirement.
A reading list will be provided at the beginning of the course. It will consist of articles and book chapters in English, German and French.
