This course is only available for students in the BA International Studies programme who have passed Hindi 1 Beginners.

Description

Hindi 2 Pre-Intermediate is an integrated communicative course for further development of elementary language skills acquired in Hindi 1 Beginners. The course focuses on further strengthening of all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and all three models of communication (interpersonal, presentational, interpretive) in Hindi for effective communication. This is an interactive course where communicative skills are improved through in-class activities, role-plays, drills and practical tasks. Conventional course materials will be supplemented by in-class formative assessment tools, video clips, classroom games and other authentic materials. This course actively uses blended learning method by integrating face-to-face classroom component with an appropriate use of online tools in & outside the classroom.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students should have reached approximately the A2 standard of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This course is the second course in a series of three language acquisition courses within the BA International Studies program.
The main objectives of the course are:

  • Further development of 4 skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - in Hindi in areas of immediate relevance such as personal information, study, work and leisure.

  • Enable students to interact in situations and routine tasks requiring exchange of information on familiar matters and activities.

  • Extended knowledge of the basic grammar of Hindi and the ability to apply this knowledge in their own oral and written language.

  • Ability to apply this knowledge practically in simple translations between English and Hindi.

  • Equip students with a greater understanding of the culture, society and daily life in India / South Asia and be aware of cultural norms, social etiquettes, cuisine, traditions, and ways of living in the region.

Mode of instruction

Tutorials

Three two-hour tutorials every week, with the exception of the midterm exam week. Attending all tutorial sessions is compulsory. For this reason, if you are unable to attend a session, it is required that you inform your tutor in advance. Please note that being absent at any tutorial session may have a negative impact on the grade of the assignment due for that particular tutorial session. This is at the discretion of the tutor.

End Grade

  • To successfully complete the course, please take note that the End Grade of the course is established by determining the weighted average of the all the components of assessment including quizzes, class participation, home assignments, written exam, oral exam, listening test etc.

  • The End Grade needs to be a 6.0 or higher to pass the course.

Resit

If the End Grade is insufficient (lower than a 6.0), there is a possibility of retaking the full 80% of the exam material (reading, writing, speaking, and listening). No resit for the tutorial (participation) is possible.

Exam review and feedback

How and when an exam review will take place will be disclosed together with the publication of the exam results at the latest. If a student requests a review within 30 days after publication of the exam results, an exam review will have to be organized.

  • Enrolment through uSis for Tutorials is mandatory.

  • Students will be enrolled for Exams by the Administration Office, as long as they have a valid Tutorial enrolment.
